Is your inner voice constantly putting you down? Perhaps you are always trying to attain that ‘perfect’ level that you feel will then prove to yourself that you are as good as everyone else. If these, or anything similar, sound familiar to you, it is possible that you have low self-esteem.
Low self-esteem is the result of faulty beliefs that we have formed about ourselves, usually during childhood. In How Hypnotherapy Works, I explain that the subconscious mind has many functions including memory, imagination, emotions and habitual behaviour – all of these combine to form our own belief system.
What separates us humans from all other creatures is that we apply reason to every action. Most of the information that forms our core beliefs, comes from our childhood, and in the absence of a reasoning explanation coming from another source, we will apply our own childlike reasoning. The problem with this, is that young children are very egocentric – they believe the world revolves around them – and, if something negative happens, rather than applying logical reasoning to the situation, they will invariably come to the conclusion that ‘it’s me, there’s something wrong with me and that’s why the negative thing happened’
To add to this, the critical factor - the part of our mind that filters what information our subconscious accepts or rejects - is far more likely to accept any information that is consistent with what is already stored in our subconscious ‘data banks’ and reject anything that isn’t.
Therefore, every time there is a negative event with no reasoning explanation from another source, this reinforces the reason that the child applied; ‘it’s me, there’s something wrong with me’. This then becomes habitual behaviour and the belief is created.
Once the belief is created, the critical factor is unlikely to let in new information to the contrary; because it isn’t consistent with the information already stored, even though that information has been ‘incorrectly labelled’ when it was stored in the child’s subconscious, and therefore the belief of ‘there is something wrong with me’ is made stronger and stronger.
